i don't feel like i am one of those women who can "come up" with stuff.
i'm a musician, but i've never written a song.
i'm a cook, but i don't think i've ever discovered a new recipe.
i am NOT an interior decorator, but i can copy.
3 STEPS TO GETTING STARTED:
1.
what do you like? i didn't know. i was stuck with a clean slate that i felt should be filled with equal parts of what my mother told me i ought to like (in a loving and helpful "find yourself" kind of way) and bad advice from a magazine. i really felt like i was an ikea-esque clean lines and super modern furniture kind of girl. that magazine article was a "find your perfect bedroom" quiz. i wanted to be mod, but i was 14. i didn't know who i was at 14. so now at 31...but it was past time to figure it out.
find things you love. pin them, cut them out and be simple and specific. i cut out spreads of living rooms because i liked the lamp, bedrooms because i liked the grouping of the photos on the wall. start small.
2.
don't feel bad about copying. i did. i felt at first like nothing was mine, like i was ripping people off.
it is YOURS. it will be YOUR lamp. they will be pictures of YOUR family and friends.
3.
spend. don't spend a lot at first, but don't be afraid to spend a little. unless you are so far strapped for money that are you having trouble paying your power bill (but that's another story...)
you might have a tiny bit of buyers remorse if you drop $40 on a lamp for your bedroom, but you will quietly love it. every time you look at it. and if you keep the lamp you bought 10 years ago because there is nothing wrong it and you shouldn't spend money when you have a perfectly good lamp you will walk by that stupid lamp and wish you that had bought that $40 one...
can you tell i had a "moment" about the lamp...
they're similar, too. but that shade is a beauty. and it makes me happy. peonies. and it might not be a lamp. and it might be cheaper than $40. but something will make you happy, too. if you know that you'll regret it-get it.
